Scratchboard Art
How?
Creating this art was a process. First, I had to make the scratchboard as a base for my "canvas" for the art that I was going to put in. I had to first use oil pastels and color the whole paper with different colors. Then, I had to layer black paint on top of it so that it would result in a clear black scratchboard. After this, I decided to sketch out my drawing on top of the black paint, so that when I scratch it, I wouldn't make as much mistakes.
I decided to create a crowded artwork. In order to make a mountain of messy trash piles, I decides to use the method "scumbling". I also used many different methods to create shadows and bolded lines. For the cable car, I had to make it feel natural and the direct opposite of it's surroundings, so I decided to use nature, such as leaves and vines, to create it. When I already finished everything that I wanted to create, I made it neater by placing black paint on places to "erase" the mistakes.
What?
My painting is mostly landscape. The mountains of trash and the sky was to really accentuate my message. My imagery is the piles and piles of trash and a person, holding onto a cable car. The cable car is essentially suppose to represent nature and how man is on the verge of losing it to the piles of junk that they themselves have created. I wanted to make this clustered in a way because I wanted to tell the viewer about how messy this world was.
Why?
I made this artwork because I felt like my message was really important for people to know. I felt that people have been abusing the beauty and the gift of nature that eventually, they were ultimately going to lose it and never get it back. If humans keep on misusing the beauty and life of nature, they will eventually get stuck and lost in the pile of junk and trash that they have created. This connects to my life because in Indonesia, there is so many trash. People do not care about the environment and how they act. Especially when Indonesia is very tropical and has lots of gifts that nature has given, people are abusing this gift.
